How harsh driving events are analysed for drivers

A harsh driving event is a type of event that could create an unsafe driving experience, such as hard braking or harsh cornering. These events are identified and classified as normal, moderate, or severe by an algorithm based on a number of factors including:

• Acceleration and deceleration
• Speed of the vehicle at the start and end of the event
• Vehicle type
• Event duration

Examples of hard braking events:

• If a vehicle travelling 64 km/h slows by 8 km/h in 1 second, it may trigger a normal hard braking event.
• If a vehicle travelling 64 km/h slows by 11 km/h in 1 second, it may trigger a moderate hard braking event.
• If a vehicle travelling 64 km/h slows by 14 km/h in 1 second, it may trigger a severe hard braking event.

Differences in the vehicle type and initial travel speed can change the severity ratings for these events.
