The odometer in a vehicle counts every mile driven. It shows the total distance a vehicle has travelled since it was new.
Accurate mileage data helps you stay on top of maintenance schedules and stay compliant with regulations. By tracking the total distance your vehicles travel, you can better manage your vehicle lifecycle and keep your fleet records precise.
Reveal tracks vehicle distance in two ways:
- The Engine Control Module (ECM): This is the most accurate way to measure mileage. Reveal takes the numbers directly from the vehicle’s own computer (ECM).
- GPS estimates: If Reveal cannot get information from the ECM, it uses GPS. It calculates how far the vehicle moved on the map and adds that distance to the last known mileage number.

Viewing odometer readings
To view odometer readings, go to Admin > Fleet and device list > View vehicle and this brings you to the Vehicle Details page. On the Overview tab there is the Usage section with odometer information.
Along with the odometer reading, you may see one of these descriptions:
-
Source: ECM
The reading in Reveal matches the data from your vehicle’s ECM data. The data is accurate and up to date. -
Source: GPS
This appears when the system cannot get a true reading from the ECM. This usually happens if one or more of the following occurs:
* The vehicle tracker is not connected to the ECM.
* The tracker is currently in GPS mode.To update the odometer reading, click the Edit icon and add the correct value.
-
Odometer reading no longer matches ECM data
The odometer reading is no longer accurate. The source data may have come from GPS, ECM, or both. This usually happens when ECM mode:
* Changes to GPS mode. To fix this and get it back to ECM, call Support.
* Changes to GPS mode and back to ECM again. To fix this, update the odometer reading. It also happens when the difference between the Reveal estimate and the engine's actual number has become too big (more than 5%). To fix this, follow the instructions in Reveal or contact Support.
