Integrated Video driver safety score

Caution

Your company may be legally obligated to let drivers know what video data is captured about them. Share this article with your drivers so they know what information is generated by the camera, stored in Reveal, and what it is used for.

The Video safety score is calculated using tracker and camera data for every driver once a week. It is based on the risk analysis of driving behaviours, frequency and event classifications that occurred during the week. Use the Video > Drivers tab to review your overall fleet safety performance.

Only Integrated Video customers with the appropriate permissions can view the Video driver safety score and Drivers tab. This is because it includes sensitive information about drivers.

Note

It is essential that drivers are assigned to the correct vehicles for this feature to be accurate and useful.

Note

The safety score is not currently available to view in the Integrated Video app.

In this article:

How the Video safety score is generated

The safety score is a number between 0 and 100 that uses camera and tracker data to determine how safe a driver is each week. The lower the score, the higher the risk that the driver could be involved in a serious incident in the future.

Each week, the safety score resets to 100.  Starting from 100, the safety score is negatively impacted by the following factors detected during the week:

  1. Unsafe driving behaviours

  2. Behavior risk

  3. Event classification

  4. Frequency.

These factors combine to create point values that are deducted from 100. This produces the weekly safety score.

What is behaviour risk?

Our AI model analyses the common patterns of unsafe driving behaviours that occur months or years leading up to a collision. The model uses this data to predict which behaviours carry a higher risk of collision. Despite the classification level, riskier behaviours impact the score more negatively than others as they are more likely to lead to a collision in future.

High collision predictors are driving behaviours such as Hard braking, Tailgating and Posted speed exceeded. These behaviours will result in a higher point reduction of the safety score, compared to lower collision predictors such as Smoking.

Use the Coaching opportunities section to identify these behaviours and prepare for a coaching session with a driver. Discussing these behaviours with a driver can reduce the risk of serious incidents. Keep in mind the following statistics:

  • 20% of collisions involved the driver with the lowest score.

  • Over half of collisions involved drivers with safety scores in the bottom quarter of the fleet.

  • 80% of collisions involved a driver with safety scores in the bottom half of the fleet.

A useful goal for your driver could be, for example, a safety score of 85. On average, 20% of all drivers will fall below this score. Drivers with a safety score lower than 85 are twice as likely to be involved in a collision in the near future.

What other factors impact the safety score

Safer driving can result in a score closer to 100. However, other factors that may influence a driver’s score are:

  • The type of device installed in the vehicle. Some cameras have the capability to detect more driving behaviours.

  • Enabling more camera AI detection in Admin>AI driving assistance.

    • Note: These settings apply to the entire fleet of vehicles fitted with AI dashcams.

  • Privacy mode.

    • Using privacy mode and/or the privacy covers on one or more camera lenses.

  • A device error.

    • The vehicle or the camera has an error. The Warning.png icon is displayed in the corresponding week, along with a ‘discretion required’ label.

  • No travel or travelling a shorter distance.

    • The distance travelled during one week is less than 15.5 miles (25 km). This may not be enough driving data to provide an accurate safety score for this week. The Caution_icon.png icon is displayed in the corresponding week and there is No score available.

Review fleet safety performance

The Video > Drivers tab shows a list of driver names, each driver’s Video safety score and the associated Trend.

Driver: A list of driver names and a link to view. By default, the list is from lowest score to highest score. Unassigned drivers will not appear in the list.

Trend: How the score has changed over the last 4 weeks.

Most frequent behaviours: The 3 most frequent non-minor behaviours, occurring in the last 4 weeks.

Last coached: When the driver was last coached.

Actions: A link to view the driver’s safety profile.

Due to the various factors that impact the safety score, it is important that fleet managers do not use driver safety scores to compare the performance of drivers in their fleet. Instead, the score should be used to identify areas of discussion ahead of a coaching session, with the aim of reducing the risk of serious incidents and improving the overall safety of individual drivers over time.

Assign drivers to the correct vehicles

Note

It is essential that drivers are assigned to the correct vehicles for this feature to be accurate and useful.

To ensure that safety score data is accurate, do the following:

How a driver can improve the safety score

Use the Coaching opportunities section to identify behaviours that may help improve a driver’s score in the future. For example, areas a driver should focus on to improve their safety score.

The additional information in the driver safety profile data helps you to identify how this driver can maintain or improve safer driving habits over time. This can help you to prepare for a coaching session.

Which behaviours can be detected

The behaviours detected by a device depends on:

  1. The type of device installed in a vehicle

  2. Whether the AI driving assistance add-on is available (AI Dashcams only)

  3. The camera AI settings (AI Dashcams only)

When a fleet has different devices installed in vehicles, a driver’s score may not be comparable to another driver. Also, a driver’s score may be affected if they are assigned to various vehicles with different devices.

View the full list of behaviours detected by each device.

How is the Video safety score different to the safety score in the Dashboard and Reports tabs?

The Video safety score is not related to the safety score found in the Dashboard tab, Driving style summary report or Custom summary report. The scores are independent of one another, and do not share the same calculation.

The safety score found in the Dashboard tab only uses data from the vehicle tracker in its calculations. The Video weekly safety score uses data from all of the following:

  • Vehicle tracker

  • Cloud AI

  • Camera AI (if an AI Dashcam is installed).

Using the safety score

Safety data will be used for coaching and training purposes, and to help build a safety culture within your organisation. All safety data should be validated with a driver to clarify whether an unsafe driving behaviour was to prevent an accident.
